What is borrowing on transfer or withdrawal?
It allows you to borrow funds against the assets in your account while executing a transfer (between subaccounts) or a withdrawal (from VALR). Collateral would be reserved within your account while your loan is outstanding.
How does it work?
The feature is only available on margin enabled sub-accounts. Borrowing can be done from the Transfer page, and from the withdrawal page on margin enabled sub-accounts.
Margin trading can be enabled on your sub-account from the Transfer page, and from the withdrawal page on the sub-account you wish to utilize borrowing. You can also enable margin trading on a sub-account by following the steps here. Borrowing for transfer or withdrawal is not available on your Main Account.
Steps to borrow from the Transfer page
1. Login to your VALR account.
2. Switch to the desired sub-account, or create a new sub-account.
3. Select "Transfer" from the menu in the top right corner.
4. Enable Margin Trading if it's not yet enabled.
5. Select the destination account, and the "allow margin" check box.
6. Choose the currency you wish to transfer/loan from the drop down menu.
7. Enter the amount that you'd like to transfer.
8. Click on the transfer button.
Steps to borrow from the withdrawal page
1. Login to your VALR account.
2. Switch to the desired sub-account, or create a new sub-account.
3. Select the wallet for the asset you wish to borrow.
4. Click on the "withdraw" button.
5. Enable Margin Trading if it's not yet enabled.
6. Enter or select the wallet address you wish to withdraw to.
7. Check the "Allow margin" check box.
8. Enter the amount you wish to borrow.
9. Review your withdrawal.
How much can I borrow, and how will interest be charged?
Interest is variable and will be charged hourly. The interest would be capitalised into the loan.
The hourly interest rate that you'd likely be charged next for your borrowing will be displayed after checking the "Allow margin" box, and selecting the currency you wish to borrow on the Transfer funds page.
The likely next hourly interest rate would be displayed after checking the "Allow margin" box on the Withdrawal page.
Together with the estimated interest rate, the estimated borrowing fee is displayed. A once-off Borrowing Fee is charged each time a loan is made. The fee is currently 0.5% of the amount you borrow (as at 30 October 2026) and is charged in the currency you borrow, rounded up to the smallest unit of that currency. The fee is added to your loan balance, so your loan balance will be the amount you receive plus the fee. For example, if you borrow 100 USDT, you'll receive 100 USDT and your loan balance will be 100.5 USDT. Interest is charged on your full loan balance, including the fee. If your loan is not made, no fee is charged. The fee is not refunded once your loan has been made, even if you repay it early.
An estimate of the maximum amount that you can borrow in the selected currency will be displayed above the hourly interest rate. This is based on the spot margin leverage multiple of the account.
Once you've entered the amount you wish to transfer, or withdraw, the amount and currency of the borrowing will be displayed below the box.
How can I repay?
Loans can be repaid whenever you prefer. There is no penalty for repaying early, but the Borrowing Fee is not refunded. You can partially or fully repay the loan by transferring or depositing funds into the margin enabled sub-account that you've used to take out the loans. You can also repay the loan by selling your collateral in that account into the debt currency.
The amount owed on your loan can be viewed by going to the relevant wallet on the sub-account you've made the loan on.
You can partially, or fully repay the loan by transferring funds to the sub-account that you've used when making the loan by following the steps below:
1. Click the menu in the top right corner.
2. Select the "Transfer button"
3. Select the sub-account you've used when making the loan as the Destination account.
4. Select the asset that you've loaned as the currency.
5. Enter the amount you wish to transfer.
6. Click on the Transfer button to complete the transfer.

8. Enter the amount you wish to transfer.
9. Click on the Transfer button to complete the transfer.
Liquidation
When an account falls below its maintenance margin, the value of its equity has dropped far enough that the risk that assets in the account won’t cover all of the debt is beyond acceptable limits.
VALR aims to liquidate accounts well before there is a risk of permanent loss. We achieve this by gradually selling off assets when the account falls below maintenance margin.
You can view your initial, maintenance and current account margin on the Pro Trading exchange pages.
