VALR has partnered with Checkout.com to make buying crypto faster and easier. You can now deposit or purchase instantly using your Debit or Credit Card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay — all in your local currency. This means you can fund your account and start your crypto journey seamlessly with the payment methods you already use every day.
Depositing funds with Checkout
With support for over 150 fiat currencies (including USD, EUR, GBP, and more), VALR makes it simple to fund your crypto journey using your local currency.
When depositing, your account will be credited in USDC or preferred stablecoin, which you can then use to buy crypto, earn rewards, or hodl.
Steps to deposit:
- Log in to your VALR account
- Go to the 'Deposit Funds' section
- Select your desired FIAT currency
- Choose Credit card via Checkout.com
- Enter the amount you would like to purchase and click continue
- Choose 'Card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay' as your deposit method, depending on availability
- Follow the Checkout instructions to finalize your deposit
- Your chosen stablecoin will be credited to your VALR wallet once the transaction is complete. Look out for emails from us confirming your order.
Buying Crypto with Checkout
With VALR’s Checkout integration, you can buy crypto instantly and have your chosen asset (e.g. BTC, ETH, SOL) credited directly to your VALR wallet — ready to trade, earn, or hodl.
Steps to buy crypto:
- Log in to your VALR account
- Go to the 'Buy Crypto' / ‘Buy & Sell’ section
- Choose the crypto you want to buy
- Select your payment method. You'll see 'Credit or debit card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay' options, depending on availability
- Select your currency, and enter the amount you would like to purchase
- Select Checkout as your provider, and continue to complete your purchase
- Follow the Checkout instructions to finalize your purchase
- Your purchased crypto will land in your VALR wallet. This can take a few seconds.
- Be on the lookout for emails confirming your order.
Please note that most South African issued bank cards are not supported by Checkout due to South African exchange control regulations.

1. What payment methods are available with Checkout.com?
You can pay using Credit or debit cards, as well as Apple Pay and Google Pay (where supported).
2. What are the fees for buying or depositing with Credit or debit card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay using Checkout?
The fees that VALR charges can be broken down as follows:
3.5% Processing Fee - This fee covers the cost of your card transaction
1.6% Conversion Fee - This is the standard Simple Buy/Sell/Swap fee that VALR charges to convert your funds into your chosen crypto asset
Important: Depending on your local currency, some additional foreign exchange (FX) charges may apply on top of the above listed fees. This is because Checkout is a global payment provider, and needs to convert your local currency to USD.
3. Which FIAT currencies are supported?
VALR supports over 150 fiat currencies, including ZAR, EUR, USD, and many more.
When you deposit or buy, we’ll show you a quote in your local currency for convenience, as well as the expected amount you would receive of your chosen asset.
4. Why does my order and transaction history show USDC?
To ensure transactions are fast, reliable, and low-cost, VALR processes payments in USD, which is then converted to USDC, and then subsequently swapped or converted into your selected crypto asset.
The conversion path typically looks like this: USD → USDC → your chosen crypto.
We display the conversion path in your transaction history to keep everything fully transparent
5. My order is “pending” — what’s happening?
Orders can take a short while to complete. The pending status means your payment is being confirmed and/or we’re finalizing the conversion to your selected crypto asset.
You’ll see a loader while this process is underway, and your order will automatically update once it’s fully completed.
6. My purchase couldn’t be completed , and I was credited with USDC. Why?
If your order can’t be completed exactly as quoted due to market conditions, we’ll credit your account with USDC instead of cancelling the order. Your funds remain available immediately, and you can trade or convert this USDC into any other crypto asset at your convenience.
7. My order is taking longer than expected, why?
Please be on the lookout for a notification and email from us with an update on your transaction. If you haven’t received any notification, please reach out to our support team for assistance here.
8. Can I deposit in my local currency?
Yes — More than 150 FIAT currencies are supported for deposits. Note that you will however still need to select a receive currency / stablecoin to be credited with (USDC, USDT or EURC).
At the moment, VALR cannot credit you directly with your local currency, except for ZAR.
9. Will I see a quote before depositing or buying?
Yes. When you enter a deposit or purchase amount in your local currency, we’ll generate a quote using the latest asset price, exchange rate, and applicable fees at that moment. This quote serves as an estimate of how much of your chosen asset you’ll receive upon confirmation.
Please note that prices may fluctuate between the time a quote is displayed and when payment is completed. While we provide real-time estimates, the exact amount of the asset you receive cannot be guaranteed.
10. Can I choose which stablecoin I receive?
Yes, currently you can select to receive USDC, USDT or EURC.
11. My payment failed. What should I do?
- Double-check payment details.
- Confirm your bank allows international/crypto transactions.
- Try another payment method.
